What DrillStreak does

DrillStreak helps young athletes get better between practices. Players follow guided drills, build daily streaks and log their games. Parents see the growth from the work their kids put in, and coaches can assign drills to a team.

Record the game, tag it, and the moments to work on become drills on the player's list. It works for nine sports in one family account: basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, football, track, golf and tennis. Game video stays on the phone.

A companion app, DrillStreak IQ, covers the mental side of the game and is rolling out now.

Founder’s Spotlight

Jay Watkins

Jay Watkins is a Utah dad and coach who played college basketball at the Division I level. He started 23 of 30 games as a freshman at the University of San Francisco and was named to the All-West Coast Conference freshman team. He ended up transferring to the College of Southern Idaho, a junior college in Twin Falls. After redshirting a year, he finished third in the conference in scoring and fifth in rebounding and earned all-conference honors. That led him to sign with Utah.

Things did not go the way he planned. At Utah he missed games with a hip stress fracture, lost his stepfather, John Smith, to a brain aneurysm during his first season, and then degenerative disc disease in his back ended his senior season in 2010-11 after 13 games. He stayed on as team captain and was the only senior honored on Senior Night.

What he took from it is what he tells his team every day: some things happen the way they happen, and that is just life. How you respond makes the difference. Accept where you are now, grow from there, and you can still live a full and fulfilling life no matter what happens.

The story behind DrillStreak

From reluctant coach to a calling

Jay used to say he would never coach. Six years ago his oldest son moved in with him and wanted to take basketball seriously, and Jay took the job reluctantly. He has coached high school basketball since, and it changed him.

“I love being a teacher, a big brother, and a place of solace for these kids.”Jay Watkins, March 2024

That is where DrillStreak and DrillStreak IQ come from: a clear way for kids and parents to see growth from the work being put in, and tools for the mental side of the game, including motivation, accountability and discipline. Jay also runs Train with Coach Jay, a private basketball training program powered by DrillStreak. The goal of all of it is the same: better people, not just better players.

Jay can talk about: motivation, passion and love for the game; accountability, discipline and responsibility; raising better people, not just better players; helping kids improve between practices; tracking growth instead of just stats; and recognizing a second chance at life and taking opportunities as they come.
